Health & Wellness Classes

International Essential Tremor Foundation support group meets quarterly (Tuesdays, 1:30-3:00 pm) at the Roswell Senior Center, 1250 Warsaw Road, Roswell Georgia 30076. For further information on specific dates, contact: Lou Ann Kraus RN, BSN at 770-993-1906
What is essential tremor? Of 20-plus different kinds of tremor, essential tremor (ET) is the most common. Also known as familial tremor, benign essential tremor or hereditary tremor, ET is a neurological condition that is often confused with Parkinson’s disease and dystonia. Because of misguided beliefs and a lack of awareness, many people with this condition never seek medical care though most would benefit from treatment.

From the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness: The flu vaccine is given during the fall. Flu season usually begins in late winter or early spring. Remember that the virus in the vaccine is dead and the flu shot cannot give you the flu.  Even though early immunization is best, it is not too late to get the vaccine in December or even January.

Vision screenings: Vision clinics are held at the Senior Centers in collaboration with Prevent Blindness Georgia. The clinics are a one stop shop. Your eyes are first dilated and then your vision is checked by an optometrist. Next is lens fitting and frame choice, all in a morning!

Why Is Physical Activity Such a Big Deal?

Health experts say that older adults should be active every day to maintain their health.

There are four main types of exercise - and seniors need some of each:
  • Endurance activities - like walking, swimming, or riding a bike.  Each build "staying power" and improve the health of the heart and circulatory system
  • Strengthening exercises which build muscle tissue and reduce age-related muscle loss
  • Stretching exercises to keep the body limber and flexible
  • Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall

Senior Health & Wellness

Good health is essential for maintaining the best quality of life for older adults. It’s been repeatedly proven that healthy aging depends on exercise, good nutrition and a solid social network. That is why Senior Services North Fulton has focused attention on health and wellness programs under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

SSNF is committed to helping seniors establish, maintain and improve a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit resulting in independence and a sense of well being throughout a long life.

Our approach at SSNF is positive, active and geared toward ensuring a continual process of making healthy choices easy for seniors. Fun and enjoyable approaches through laughter yoga, tai chi, stretching and even impressing the grandkids (and great-grandkids!) with Nintendo Wii fitness moves keeps seniors not only healthy, but happier as well.

In addition, vision clinics, senior and caregiver support groups and other wellness-focused education opportunities at SSNF Neighborhood Senior Centers and outreach into the community are regularly scheduled to help seniors independently self-direct their own care needs and wellness levels.

SSNF’s senior program planning centers around the concepts of Successful Aging through the MacArthur Foundation Studies of Cognitive-Physical Connections. Contact the SSNF Health & Wellness office for more information.
