Volunteer

We are the only agency in the region that relies upon a totally volunteer workforce to deliver Meals on Wheels.

But there are many ways to volunteer depending upon your time and interests.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers are needed for delivery routes Monday through Friday with a minimum commitment of six months service. In addition, volunteers for the substitute list are always welcome. Drivers must be over the age of eighteen with a valid Driver’s License. Background checks are required for volunteers who come in contact with seniors within their homes or become active in the Friendly Visitor Program.

Pre-packaged meals are ready for pickup at one of our three Neighborhood Senior Centers located in Alpharetta, Roswell & Sandy Springs. Volunteers deliver meal routes to 5-12 senior adults between the hours of 11:00am and 1:00pm. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for a route at least one day per month but can do so more frequently if they wish. You will have the same seniors each time, so you truly become a friendly and familiar face. Each route takes 1-2 hours. Too busy to commit to a regular route? We also welcome volunteers as substitutes to fill-in on routes as needed.

Friendly Visitor Program Volunteers are paired with senior clients in need of companionship. This important job can be scheduled at your convenience. Most volunteers visit once a week or every other week for an hour or two. Friendly visitors occasionally take seniors to doctor appointments, do yard work or help with easy tasks. Volunteering as a Friendly Visitor truly makes a difference in the life of a senior and our Friendly Visitors tell us they get back much more than they give. For seniors who do not have family nearby this is truly a special relationship that makes a dramatic difference in their lives.

Neighborhood Senior Center Volunteer SSNF Neighborhood Senior Centers are located in Alpharetta, Roswell and Sandy Springs. Centers are open Monday through Friday and are a place for older adults to participate in health & wellness programs, social and educational activities and enjoy a nutritious hot lunch. Volunteers can enrich the senior center experience by sharing talent, time and life experience. Center staff members welcome office assistance or lunch support as well as help in leading exercise, art and special interest classes. So, want to lead a dance class, teach crafts or card games or play the guitar for seniors...consider becoming a Center Volunteer.

Office and Staff Support The ever increasing work of SSNF is done with a few staff and the generous hours and efforts given by our volunteers. We welcome office work support and phone assistance volunteers, special event committee members and others to support our staff toward fulfilling our mission. Like doing website design, writing articles for the paper or updating database information? We’d love to have you!

Hear what actor Richard Gere and his father Homer have to say about the importance of Meals-on-Wheels volunteers, from firsthand experience "Click Here"

My initial experience with Meals on Wheels began three years ago. What started as a “nice thing to do” quickly became a love affair with seniors. Delivering meals to those who need them so much is an incredibly rewarding experience. “My Seniors” (as I like to refer to them) become my friends, quickly know my name, invite me into their homes and most importantly, are overwhelmingly grateful for the services and support that SSNF provides for them as they struggle to maintain a sense of purpose and independence. — Bonnie S.

I began delivering Meals on Wheels when we were transferred to a new area for the first time and have been delivering them in many cities since then.  I began because I enjoy older people and I couldn't do things for my own parents so these dear seniors often became my surrogate family. Over the years, delivering MOW has been more of a blessing to me and I know that the daily contact of a concerned individual and a smiling face is so very important to seniors. — Diane Z.

Delivering MOW has been the most rewarding experience of my life and I will always look back on this time in my life as positive inspiration to continue to grow and be the best that I can be. — Deborah J.  (SSNF Nursing Student Intern – North Georgia College and State University)

Serve On Board or Committee

The SSNF Board Development Committee is always interested in identifying potential board members who share our passion for seniors.  The Board meets monthly and helps provide guidance to the Executive Director as well as expertise in areas needed to support the agency and staff with our mission.

SSNF is on a July 1-June 30 fiscal year and so we install the board in May so the new board has some input into the final budget for the coming year.  This year, our Board installation and retreat is scheduled for May 14th (a dinner, installation of board members and introductory session for the retreat) and the afternoon of May 15th.

Non Board members may also serve on board committees.

For information about board requirements and to talk with our incoming Board President about your interest in being considered for the Board, please contact Kathy Field at 770-263-7706 or send her an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Wish List

While SSNF provides a wide range of services, there are things we know seniors desperately need or would really enjoy, but we do not have the funds to routinely provide. And that is where you can really help! Below is a wish list of things that you could donate for us to distribute or use for our seniors:

Boost and Ensure ---- these are terrific nutritional supplements that are sometimes easier to take than a regular meal and they are a healthy snack during the day.

Depends ---- gives seniors the extra confidence they need to venture out for socialization and activities.

Volunteer Exercise Instructors ---- Certified exercise instructors are always needed at our Senior Centers. Exercise is a must for our seniors and they truly enjoy the opportunity to stretch and improve blood flow, increase their stamina and participate in group exercise.

Gift Cards ---- our Senior Centers take participants to area malls and stores on a regular basis.  At times, both our Center participants as well as our home bound seniors who receive in home assistance or Meals on Wheels, need help with purchasing staples such as cleaning supplies and healthy food.  Gift cards to area grocery stores and Walmart are always helpful for us to have.  We use them as holiday or birthday gifts to seniors and can provide them to those we know are struggling financially. Seniors also love Bingo and raffles and we sometimes use gift cards as “prizes” for those activities.

If you would like to donate Gift Cards, Boost, Ensure or Depends, please feel free to drop them off at any of our three Senior Centers or at the administrative office. To arrange for drop off, or you are interested in volunteering to lead an exercise class, please call our office at 770-993-1906.
