(Roswell), (GA) (February 19, 2009) – Senior Services North Fulton announced today that it will be holding Mayors For Meals Day as a part of its March For Meals campaign. Mayors from all six municipalities, Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, Mountain Park, Sandy Springs and Johns Creek will be participating in the event to show their support for the community’s seniors. Joining them will be Liz Hausmann and Ashley Jenkins, City Council members for Johns Creek and Sandy Springs.
We are excited about having our city leaders participate in our event. Studies show that 80% of home bound seniors are at significant risk of malnutrition –which is a huge concern for all of us!” said Elizabeth Igleheart, Executive Director. “Our Mayors have been involved with our program in the past, and the national Mayors For Meals Day is an excellent way to continue our relationship.”
March For Meals is a national campaign, initiated by Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), which seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community. Meals on Wheels is just one way that Senior Services North Fulton helps seniors and their families address the nutrition and hunger needs of seniors. They also provide daily meals at each of the three Senior Centers. In 2008, SSNF started a program called Healing Meals, through which they provide a senior, who is being discharged from a hospital or rehab facility, with 10 nutritious heat and eat meals to help speed their recovery. “There’s no income requirement for receiving Meals” said Elizabeth Igleheart, “and our volunteers deliver more than just the meal—they are often the only visitor a senior will have on a given day, and that is so important!”
