Senior Services has been around since 1991, yet seniors and their families may still be unaware of the many ways in which SSNF helps make a difference in the lives of seniors within our community.  We appreciate the support of area newspapers and publications as they spread the word about the wonderful work that is done by SSNF and our volunteers.

Crabapple seniors preparing Christmas stockings for our troops in Afghanistan

If you have followed our newsletters or website recently, you may remember the story of our Crabapple seniors preparing Christmas stockings for our troops in Afghanistan. Earlier this month, the seniors received a package from the 855th Air Expeditionary Squadron, Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan. Below is a picture of the contents, which were accompanied by the following letter...

Thank you for all you have done for us over here. I have presented you a Commanders coin and a US Flag from my unit the 855th Air Expeditionary Squadron. In the Air Force tradition, Commanders have unit coins and present them for two reasons: individual achievement and to say thank you. On one side is the Air Force crest and on the other is the Air Force symbol and silver oak leaf, representing the rank of Commander. On the border is the squadron (855 AES) and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF), representing the squadron is serving in combat.

Thank you for all your support and the Christmas stockings were wonderful and generated a lot of smiles.

Robert Fournier, Lt. Col, USAF
Commander, 855 Air Expeditionary Squadron
Camp Phoenix, Afghanistan

Stockings for our U.S. Troops
socksMarguerite Fournier is a 72 year old member of the Crabapple Senior Center in Alpharetta. She is a very special, kind and generous lady who has taken the initiative to sew 100 Christmas Stockings for our U.S. Troops in Afghanistan. She has gotten most of our seniors, as well as our volunteers, involved in this worthy project and everyone here has been sewing beads and embellishing the stockings Marguerite has made. They have also made over 300 handmade Holiday cards and have written special messages and wishes in each. There have been various donations from local businesses and individuals that come to our center. We have received item donations from the Marriott at Windward, Wal-Mart, Kroger and Dr. Teets Dentistry in Alpharetta. The seniors at our center are also donating warm clothes that Marguerite is packing and mailing to Afghanistan. This project has been a huge success in that everyone involved has felt like they have contributed to our dedicated men and women who are sacrificially serving our beautiful country.

December was all about Angels and hearts!

This year, the Angel Tree program was truly a multi-generational effort. Cheerleaders for Charity made 600 angels for us and each angel was adopted by an elementary student at Mountain Park Elementary School.  Our 300 home bound seniors each received several gifts, delivered by SSNF care managers, staff and volunteers. It was a wonderful way to let our seniors know that they were not alone or forgotten.

Angel Tree Program

AngelsHundreds of gifts donated by individuals and community groups will soon be arriving at the SSNF offices. Building on the success of the Angel Tree holiday gift program begun in 2007, Care Managers will be enhancing the holiday season for SSNF’s home-bound clients who receive services in their homes, such as Meals on Wheels, housekeeping and personal or respite care services.

Mountain Park Elementary School requested that each of their 700 students have the opportunity to adopt an angel, labeled with a client’s first name and wish list. The Cheerleaders for Charity made the 700 angel cut outs; SSNF Interns Cori Ross and Lauren Sherman, from the MSW program at UGA, made hundreds of calls to seniors to find out what each senior would put on a wish list. SSNF volunteers helped with data entry and labeling.

Employees of the City of Roswell are again working with Care Manager Marjory Walsh on secret surprise gifts for many of the seniors. Ms. Walsh and the other SSNF Care Managers, Mary Dubois, Kim Garrett, and Colleen Davis, will be warming the hearts of their clients, delivering a special gift to each during the holiday season.
