Why Is Physical Activity Such a Big Deal? |
Health experts say that older adults should be active every day to maintain their health.
There are four main types of exercise - and seniors need some of each:
- Endurance activities - like walking, swimming, or riding a bike. Each build "staying power" and improve the health of the heart and circulatory system
- Strengthening exercises which build muscle tissue and reduce age-related muscle loss
- Stretching exercises to keep the body limber and flexible
- Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall

From Open Hand Dieticians… some baking tips:
- SUBSTITUTE whole wheat flour for half of the all-purpose flour (so if recipe calls for 1 cup flour, use just 1/2 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup whole wheat flour)
- SUBSTITUTE unsweetened applesauce for 1/2 of the butter, margarine or oil
- USE cooking spray to grease pans instead of stick butter or margarine
- SUBSTITUTE 2 egg whites for 1 whole egg
- USE plain yogurt instead of sour cream
Cooking substitutions:
- SAUTÉ with cooking spray or low sodium broth instead of oil
- USE brown rice instead of white rice
- REPLACE regular pasta with whole wheat pasta
- EAT MORE whole wheat bread rather than white bread
- USE non-fat or low-fat milk, yogurt, mayonnaise, salad dressing, etc
- INSTEAD of just draining browned ground beef, rinse it well under water to remove oil
- RINSE canned vegetables and beans to lower sodium
- USE herbs and spices to flavor foods instead of salt

Good health is essential for maintaining the best quality of life for older adults. It’s been repeatedly proven that healthy aging depends on exercise, good nutrition and a solid social network. That is why Senior Services North Fulton has focused attention on health and wellness programs under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
SSNF is committed to helping seniors establish, maintain and improve a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit resulting in independence and a sense of well being throughout a long life.
Our approach at SSNF is positive, active and geared toward ensuring a continual process of making healthy choices easy for seniors. Fun and enjoyable approaches through laughter yoga, tai chi, stretching and even impressing the grandkids (and great-grandkids!) with Nintendo Wii fitness moves keeps seniors not only healthy, but happier as well.
In addition, vision clinics, senior and caregiver support groups and other wellness-focused education opportunities at SSNF Neighborhood Senior Centers and outreach into the community are regularly scheduled to help seniors independently self-direct their own care needs and wellness levels.
SSNF’s senior program planning centers around the concepts of Successful Aging through the MacArthur Foundation Studies of Cognitive-Physical Connections. Contact the SSNF Health & Wellness office for more information.
